In 2021, Bottega Veneta launched Bottega for Bottegas, a program to promote and support artisans around the world. From initially honoring local Italian workshops, to the following year's worldwide search for craftsmanship inspired by Italian culture, to this year's return to craftsmanship itself, the Bottega for Bottegas program has matured and transcended the brand's own cultural boundaries, integrating itself into a more universal context of craftsmanship.
Chinese craftsman Liu Wenhui's mortise and tenon blocks were selected for the third edition of the Bottega for Bottegas program. Thanks to its fine craftsmanship, Liu Wenhui's work recreates ancient Chinese architecture on a microscopic level and popularizes mortise and tenon craftsmanship in the form of toys for the general public. Commissioned by Bottega Veneta, the author interviewed craftsman Liu Wenhui, and this article tells his entrepreneurial journey and his grand vision of preserving traditional Chinese culture.
